Who we are

FamTrail is a travel journal app made for family use. Its server is run by the developer at home, not by a company. There are no ads and no tracking.

What we collect

• Account: the anonymous user identifier from “Sign in with Apple” and the display name you provide. We never see your Apple ID password, and if you choose to hide your email, we don't get it either.
• What you record: trips, legs, expenses and to-dos, plus the places, times, notes and photos you save in your Footprint Diary.
• Location: read once, only when you tap “Use Current Location” or open “Record”, to fill in the place and list nearby restaurants and places. There is no background location tracking.
• Documents: flight itineraries, hotel confirmations, tickets and similar PDFs or images you import.
• Photos: compressed copies of photos you add to a trip, and originals uploaded while on Wi‑Fi and charging. The capture time and location embedded in photos (EXIF) are kept to place them in your trip and on the map.

If you don't sign in, everything stays on your phone and nothing is uploaded.

Document recognition

By default, documents are read on your phone (Apple's text recognition and on-device Apple Intelligence), and the recognized text is not sent to any third party.

Optional “Precise recognition with Claude”: only when you tap this button while importing, the text read from your documents is sent through our server to Anthropic (the company behind Claude) for that one recognition. Anthropic does not train models on it. The document files themselves are not sent to Anthropic.

How data is used and who sees it

Data is used only to provide the app's features. Your trip content (including photos and documents) is visible only to family members you invite to the same trip; your Footprint Diary is visible only to family you have turned on “Sync my trips” for. Apart from the optional Claude recognition you choose, we don't sell or share any data with third parties, and nothing is used for advertising.

Exchange rates come from European Central Bank public data (via frankfurter.dev); these requests contain no personal information.

Storage and security

Data is stored on the developer's home server in Italy, transferred over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and backed up daily.

Deletion

You can delete your account at any time in the app under “Account → Delete Account”: trips you created (including all photos and documents) are permanently deleted; in trips owned by others, what you added stays with the other family members. You can also delete individual items, photos or documents within a trip.
